Hello and thank you for visiting ESSEC Business School website,
Since you are here, I assume that you are considering applying for a Master in Finance program which is an important decision and I hope that I can help you make the choice a little easier.
My name is Minh Canh but you can call me Dendi. I have a science background but I am interested in working in finance industry and that's why I applied for the MiF program at ESSEC. Like many other finance/business students, I want to work in banking industry, investment banking in specific. Getting into this industry is extremely difficult and therefore, you would want to choose the right business school which can provide you the best support to break into the field.
Based on my experience and what I heard from people in the industry, to land a job in investment banking you would need good technical knowledge: valuation, 3 statements, merger model; need to know why you want to do this job; need to know why do you want to work for this bank and need to be a nice person.
ESSEC gives me the means to acquire these neccessary skills and knowledge for my application. We have very good in-house lecturers who give you a very solid foundation understanding of WACC, dcf etc. (don't believe it? try answer: what is beta of debt?). The school strong connection with the industry allow it to invite professionals to teach courses like firm valuation, m&a or private equity. These professionals can, if they like you, refer you or at least give you insights into what they are doing and help you build up your motivation to apply for investment banking and to show to interviewers that you are actually interested. Alumni network is also a good source of information. Many alumni are friendly and responsive to your request. They can give you the tips and tell you the steps they took to land a job which you can replicate. They also give the best interview tips since they made it and now are sitting on the other side of the interviewing table.
Asking why ESSEC is different is like being asked why do you apply to our bank question. Banks provide similar services from M&A, ECM, DCM to S&T etc. so at the end of the day what makes them different is the people (what they have done and their personalities). I can't tell you ESSEC is a good fit to everyone, but if you want to find out if ESSEC is a good fit for you, I am happy to help.
