My name is Donald Kim, I am Korean-American, and I am currently in the Global MBA in the Luxury Brand Management Track.
A little bit about myself, I was born in Los Angeles, California but also grew up abroad for 8 years in 3 other countries (Hong Kong, Japan, Korea), so travel related excursions and global cultures have always been a big part of my life! You can also say that I am a third-culture kid.
I received my education at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in Washington DC, majoring in International Politics-Foreign Policy. My specific focus was on indigenous studies in Australia, with my thesis on the soft power of Australian Aboriginal art. After my studies, I transitioned into the world of high tech in California and Silicon Valley, working for multinational tech corporations like Apple and Oracle and a hyper growth startup, Faire.
I'm currently at ESSEC because I finally wanted to combine my professional skills with my passion for the luxury watch industry. Throughout my career I have been a watch collector, but slowly began to appreciate the business aspects of haute horlogerie watch brands and other luxury brands overall. When I was ready to make this move, there was no better place for my transition and studies than ESSEC's GMBA Luxury Brand Management Track, a track that was co-founded by LVMH and has created many key figures in the world of luxury.
For anyone else who is curious about making a total career shift like I did from tech to luxury, or have any questions about what working in luxury is like and how ESSEC can aid in this venture, I would be more than willing to connect and provide information!
